Lose weight easier by learning the rules

Although I am a Good Morning America fan, Today.com recently featured an article on why men seem to loose weight faster than women.

“Natural emotional differences between men and women play a huge role in weight loss challenges, says TODAY diet and nutrition editor, Dr Madelyn Fernstrom.” “Behavioral barriers for women are much tougher than for many men. But typically, women struggle more because women tend to be more emotional eaters, rewarding ourselves with food high in calories, high in sweet, and high in fat,” said Fernstrom.

Men, she said, typically do not eat emotionally, to “suit the hungry heart.”

Men and women also typically lose weight at different rates because of physiological disparities. Men’s bodies are usually bigger and contain more muscle, and they tend to burn fat quicker due to these factors. Although a woman cannot change her body enough to burn calories equal to those burned by a man, she can encourage her metabolism by increasing muscle mass. Start with understanding exactly why guys lose weight faster than girls.

Men also tend to have more muscle mass that keeps metabolism revved up and helps them burn more calories. “Men may be able to lose more fat in response to diet and exercise because belly fat, which is where men tend to accumulate more body fat, may be easier to lose than fat around hips and thighs —where women tend to accumulate body fat, especially in response to exercise.” (today.com)

Gaining muscle mass is harder for women because women don’t have the testosterone to fuel that sort of tissue, says Fernstrom. “It’s a sort of diet lure that if you built muscle, you’ll burn calories faster,” Fernstrom says. “Even men who don’t exercise have greater muscle mass to begin with. That’s the prime biological difference.”

Men tend to have more lean muscle tissue, which burns more calories than body fat, even during rest. And when men and women cut the same number of calories, men usually do lose more weight – but it’s short-term. (cnn.com)

So, what can you do?  First, try to cut out the emotional eating of the empty calories.  Second, try High Intensity Interval Training, to lose body fat, build muscle, improve cardio and improve your overall health and well being.  Third, try cutting out processed carbs and sugars and eat more lean protein, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some legumes.  Maybe your pounds can start to weigh a little less!  Please let me know if you have any tips for our friends looking to lose some weight and share below.  Thank you!
